Ik denk dat de meeste mensen wel weten hoe een CDN dienst werkt maar Akamai doet natuurlijk veel meer. Er worden garanties gegeven dat de site UP blijft. Het is daarom juist wel handig dat de site vanaf servers vanuit heel de wereld geserveerd kan worden.

Die redirect fout is echt om je kapot te schamen. We weten allemaal dat dit mogelijk is maar juist bij deze site mag dit niet gebeuren, nooit. En hoe dat dan word afgedaan in een persbericht is helemaal schandalig.


Overigens zijn de cijfers van Akamai wel heel erg impressive. Denk dat we dit op het moment wel de betrouwbaarste hoster ter wereld mogen noemen. Is er iemand hier niet mee eens?

Er zijn andere technieken beschikbaar om te zorgen dat een site online blijft, daar heb je dus niet persé CDN voor nodig.

Overigens zijn de cijfers van Akamai wel heel erg impressive. Denk dat we dit op het moment wel de betrouwbaarste hoster ter wereld mogen noemen. Is er iemand hier niet mee eens?

Dat hangt samen met meerdere zaken. Het voordeel van CDN hosting (al dan niet bij Akamai) is dat niet de hele site eruit klapt als er één van de locaties onder vuur ligt. Akamai heeft zo'n groot netwerk dat ze bepaalde beloftes kunnen maken die aanbieders op de lokale markt niet kunnen nakomen. Bedien je echter uitsluitend die lokale markt, dan is hosting bij Akamai geldverspilling. Een lokale aanbieder met verstand van zaken en een netwerk over meerdere datacenters kan dan net zulke, of wellicht nog sterkere, garanties bieden als Akamai.

Uitzonderingen hierop zijn 'lokale markten' die zo ver zijn uitgestrekt dat het eigenlijk niets meer met 'lokaal' te maken heeft. Denk dan aan de US (east naar west coast), maar ook Europa als markt. Dan loont het weer om presence te hebben in de deelgebieden (staten c.q. landen) omdat route paths anders te lang zouden worden.
