    http://www.google.nl/search?q=cache:...anel&hl=nl</a>

I've been struggling over the past weeks to find a good Game Control Panel for our site. It so happens that GameCP from www.gamecp.com was mentioned on the hlds linux mailing list (counter strike help for the layman.) I decided to give it a shot. "What did I have to lose?" I asked myself.

3 full days with nothing to show for it. Thats what I lost.

I wont go into detail on every part of the install, because this really isnt an official review. However I though you guys should know what you are getting into before shelling out the minimum $150.00 to purchase this software.

    1. The install documentation is worthless. Its outdated, and doesnt even remotely apply to the current version of the software.

    2. Support was hit and run. And not only for me, a trial customer. I witnessed several other people in his IRC channel who where left hanging with unanswered questions. I didnt attempt to call him, so I cant say how well phone support works.

    3. The software itself is broken. It tells you to do things during the install that, because of updates, arent required anymore. When I asked about performing certain functions during the install, I was told "Dont do what it says. Its outdated." Well, where does that leave me, the poor guy installing this? No documentation, no support. I can even trust the installer to tell me what to do.

    4. Be aware that GameCP *requires* root access via ssh. Not a good thing in my opinion especially considering all the brute force attempts at root access we have all seen.

    5. The documentation, as does William (GameCP coder) says to su to the user running apache and perform some install operations as that user. First of all, my apache user is "nobody" and doesnt have a shell. I was told to enable the shell for the user "nobody" BAD idea.

    6. GameCP requires php globals to be turned on. Not a bad thing necessarily, but certainly not good for the security-conscience.

    7. The install failed at another point, and it was a permissions problem in the web directory for gcp. I was told to simply chmod 777 the file. This too might not be bad in and of itself, but when you consider that this is closed source, and being told to chmod 777 a .php file arbitrarily without rhyme or reason gave reason for concern.

These are most of the major concerns I had, and I believe justified. GameCP certainly could be, with a lot of work, something that should be considered for a GSP. Its simply not ready right now. William on IRC (I spoke with him a lot when he was available) was polite and helpful, but I came away with the impression that he is an open source coder, with an open source attitude about coding, i.e. "I write it, you figure it out, and if you cant, write your own code" One can get away with that writing open source software. However, it simply isnt tolerable when you are charging $150.00 per box. There is an extreme lack of detail in the software, the documentation, even in the maintenance of his own website. All these things combined should throw several red flags in your head and cause you to look closer before making a GameControlPanel purchase.

If nothing else, please TRY this software before you buy it.

Link werkt blijkbaar niet omdat het forum nogal rare dingen uit steekt met de link zoals in het midden [url] zetten enz.

Maar tekst zegt genoeg denk ik :-(

The information from above, quoted of hondaman is based off a very old version of GameCP, the newest version(s) do not have any problems that he had and in all it runs very very solid managing 1 to 500 servers and 1-200 machines.

Please dont base his review on what GameCP is today, the program has made major changes since his review and has expanded even more.

I have tested your demo version of the control panel and it still stop/start/restart the server with ssh. So I guess that problem hasn’t been solved yet?

Are you still thinking that $200 is a fair price? I would lower the prices like 50% al least. This isn’t a reasonable price for a Control Panel with that amount of profit that some people like me makes with a gameserver.

I’ll translate a little of my text. The chance is high that I will make a control panel by my own (or with some people who wants to help me) that will be better and would be available for a much lower price. Because I personally hate people who has a monopoly on something and use it to ask prices that are unreasonable.

BTW Thank you for joining this forum and I hope that you understand what I’m trying to say.

Thanks, I've been a member here for awhile since we first got posted about, I try to follow these threads but the translation to english sometimes is no good.

We dont consider the managing stuff threw ssh as being a problem, not sure why anyone would really. Its a highly secure setup, less problems and more security the using nearly any other method, all server control is done by the user and root is only there to add new users and manage a few settings beyond that, root access is very limited.

$200 is a very fair price we feel, 1/2 off is a little to low but I would be willing to work on prices with anyone from WHT.nl since we do gain a lot of business from this sites users.

If you end up coding your own panel good luck, youll quickly see why we charge $200 a machine, its not an easy job creating something like this and managing tons of clients and machines, it takes a lot of work and a lot of time, GameCP has been in development for nearly 3 years [2 years of real development] and has come a long way

Check out R9-2 when its ready [the 7th hopefully] I'm sure youll be impressed, install it and get a trial and see if you really like it then base your decision from there, we do offer the software free for 14 days to make sure you do like it so please check it out

I'll keep checking this thread but e-mail me if you would like to negotiate prices.

    Thanks.

Correct me if I’m wrong but is it true that if you want a dutch version of the CP that you have to pay an extra $100 per server ?

Then it makes $300 for just a control panel for some gameservers ?

No wonder that most of the gameserver hosts aren’t giving a CP with there gameservers. It is so expensive

Do you really think that $300 isn’t much for a gameserver ? It’s 1/3 of the price of a machine.

BTW am I wrong or did I really saw this control panel for € 83.5 once? That’s 116.5€ less then the price now?

The language module is $100 one time, not per machine.

We charge for the language module simply because it requires extra coding and maintance with the language translations and added backend updates.

$200 per machine is a one time payment, this includes free updates for life and better support then monthly fees, with the $200 fee youll never pay anything again unless you buy add-ons or more licenses.

A one time fee is something you wont find anywhere else for just about any type of panel, most places will stick you with monthly fees only, costing you a fortune, even at the rate of $200 one time you save $100 the first year and youll own the license never having to pay again.

The panel sold as low as $75 at some time, this price was for pre R9 versions of the software, at this stage it was very early beta testing and did not include nearly 1/2 of what it does now.

The prices are set at the rate they are due to the fact that this program now does more then ever planned at the old price rate, the more we add to it the more we charge simply because we put so many extra hours in to add these features.

Yes, The MAzTER, you can request a free 14 day trial license from the website, I would suggest waiting for r9-2, you will not need to request a license and the install will be better.

    Yes, 5 x 200 + 100 for language is $1,100 usd.

I will offer people on this forum a discount at $150 per machine along with $50 for the language module, the language module will be added in a upcomming release.

    5 x 150 + 50 = $800 usd.

    Saving $300, a cost of 2 machines.

    Sound good?

This is a topic about the goods and bads of gamecp, not a "I can't afford it"-topic.

If it's too much for you, find something else.

    Back on-topic.

    You can:
    - Master server control over slave servers, install games remotely.
    http://gamecp.com/overview.php

But you'll probably have to get a license for each machine.
