mail komt terug met het bericht; Relay access denied, error: 554 5.7.1

Het gaat om een Centos 6.4 VPS server met sendmail
in /etc/hosts staat:
127.0.0.1 localhost
ser.ver.ip.adres sub.hostdomein.nl

in /etc/hostname staat:
sub.hostdomein.nl

M4 config is een regel gezet SMART_HOSTS verwijzend naar smtp.provider.nl

Ik heb het idee dat ondanks de M4 verwijzing hij geen verbinding maar met de smtp.provider.nl
en derhalve de headers onvoldoende zijn.

Heb je ook al in de logfile op de server gekeken? Mogelijk staat daar nog wat meer informatie.
Het lijkt er in ieder geval op dat je ingestelde smart host je mail niet accepteerd. Hoewel ik al lang geen sendmail meer gebruik, is dat vast wel terug te vinden in je log files.
