Hi forum user, You've probably noticed the big "watch this space" message we’ve had on the SolusVM homepage for the last few weeks. Well, here's our big news… SolusVM is now part of OnApp! I'm really excited about this move, and I've been itching to share it with you. OnApp is one of the most exciting and innovative companies in cloud computing today. As part of OnApp, we have the backing of a large, successful and very well-funded business, and the support of a team of really smart, switched-on people who know hosting inside out, and who care about what SolusVM customers need. So, what does this mean for SolusVM? We're not changing the fundamental purpose of SolusVM. SolusVM was designed as a fast and streamlined way to deploy and manage your virtual servers. Now we’ll be able to focus even more time and energy to make it the best it can possibly be. One of the most exciting things we’re planning to do is to open up SolusVM to OnApp’s global network of clouds - otherwise known as the OnApp Federation - so you can deploy virtual servers on cloud infrastructure all over the world, on demand. That’s going to be pretty awesome and we should be introducing the first beta before the end of the year. We also hope to expand the range of templates available with SolusVM, too. What else? As part of the OnApp team I’ll continue leading the development of SolusVM, and we’ll be building up the SolusVM development team too. Apart from that, and a few little changes to the website, you shouldn’t see any real difference to the way you buy and use SolusVM today. SolusVM is going to keep improving and keep delivering what we know you guys all rely on. With the backing and resources of OnApp, we’re going to be able to keep doing that, long into the future. Ben benieuwd wat er gaat veranderen de komende tijd. Het is wel een product waar wij tevreden mee zijn. OnApp is ook interessant overigens, maar daar hebben wij nog niet volledig naar gekeken.

Bijzonder, maar ik denk dat het wel de juiste keuze is. Ben benieuwd wat dit gaat brengen.

This is quite a long email, so please bear with me... I have some exciting news that I’ve had to keep quiet about until now - but I can finally share it with you!

What's the news?
We have just acquired SolusVM, the virtual server management system. The SolusVM team and the SolusVM product are now part of the OnApp family. You can read more about it here , and register for our webinar to find out more.

But first, let me give you a quick overview.

Why have we done this?
SolusVM is a very different product to OnApp. It’s focused on simple, no-frills VM deployment - no failover, no autoscaling, no storage flexibility, no CDN... I could go on… but for the bare-bones VPS market, where people just want to spin up a VM, it’s a a perfect platform.

In that way it's a great complement to OnApp, and in fact we have many customers running both systems side-by-side already, targeting different parts of the market at different price points. We're not going to change that. SolusVM and OnApp will be developed, sold and supported separately, to meet those different market needs.

And...
That's pretty cool. But this is even better. While we’re not planning to change the scope of SolusVM, we are going to enable SolusVM to access OnApp Federation infrastructure.

In other words, we’re going to give a couple of thousand SolusVM hosts – and hundreds of thousands of Solus VMs – the ability to deploy on OnApp cloud infrastructure, anywhere in the world. The SolusVM community is an awesome, global community of hosts and end users who need infrastructure for VMs, and soon they'll be able to buy it through the OnApp Federation.

Why does this change everything?
The OnApp Federation is a new type of marketplace. When you're building a new market you have to balance supply and demand, and so far we've focused mainly on the supply side - enabling hundreds of providers to contribute infrastructure. By welcoming the SolusVM community into the Federation, we're boosting the demand side too.

This is going to kickstart the OnApp ecosystem and create new opportunities for every member of the Federation, whether you're selling capacity, or using OnApp with federated cloud or CDN resources, or using SolusVM + federation to create your own Digital Ocean/Linode service.

The OnApp Federation is as game-changing for this market as Uber or AirBnB were for theirs. And now you're going to see the momentum really start to build. We hope to have SolusVM + Federation in beta before the end of the year.

Had het bericht van Ditlev zelf ook ontvangen gisteren. Wij maken geen gebruik van SolusVM maar wel van Onapp.
De mogelijkheid die ze nu gaan bieden om SolusVM te laten werken met de Onapp federation marketplace gaat een super product opleveren naar mijn mening.

Goede zet van zowel Onapp als SolusVM. Er is veel negatieve publiciteit rondom SolusVM geweest maanden geleden en ik ben benieuwd hoe de ontwikkeling van SolusVM nu verder gaan. De code van SolusVM schijnt dramatisch (geweest) te zijn. Nu er een grotere organisatie achter zit zal het misschien herschreven worden en is er meer man kracht beschikbaar om nieuwe dingen te ontwikkelen. Zal Onapp de prijs voor SolusVM blijven hanteren of zullen ze de prijs gaan verhogen? Persoonlijk denk ik dat ze het mooi zo moeten laten, want de klanten die SolusVM gebruiken hebben dan andere bedoelingen als de klanten van Onapp. Onapp is in principe altijd dezelfde prijs blijven hanteren, het enige wat ze veranderd hebben is de minimale afname.

Klopt. Toen we nog met versie 2.2 aan het testen waren zijn we gestopt met Onapp omdat het inderdaad op alle vlakken aan elkaar was geknoopt. We draaien nu 3.3 in een dev omgeving en hebben toegang tot een speciale BETA die nog niet publiek beschikbaar is en ik moet zeggen dat het er een stuk beter uitziet.

OnApp is leuk maar van IS moet je afblijven naar mijn mening. Kort na het introduceren getest en gelijk kwamen in een aantal scenarios grote problemen naar voren. Ik weet niet of dit inmiddels opgelost is maar dat is weer een ander topic

Ik ben benieuwd hoe ze het gaan integreren met OnApp. Het klinkt goed al ben ik wel benieuwd hoe het uiteindelijk gaat werken icm billing systemen.
