After Ms patches last Wed ...

    Hi ..

Is anyone else having time problems on their networks?

Yesterday (Thu) I had approx 50% of my users unable to login because "the
time on the client and server are different" and I could not figure out a
way to solve it. Some people managed to login but could not get access to
shared resources; others could not login at all. I tried syncing the time
but that didn't work and several other things I tried didn't seem to work.
Having said that, I managed to get them operational after lots of cursing
but I can't say what it was that I did that solved it. I thought about the
new patches from MS and read all there is about them to see if they affect
logins/Kerberos/time service but it doesn't seem to be the case.

This morning, I found a MS white paper
    (http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/docs/_Toc528382509) which explains
how an "Access is denied" message can appear if RPC fails to authenticate
and I started thinking about those patches again. Can anyone help shed
some light on this? I fail to believe that I'm the only one on the planet
who got negatively affected by these patches, so either I'm the first to
mention it or I'm the only one with a skewed set of network settings!

    Thanks

I had a different issue after Wednesdays updates. Two win2k computers in
my office were rendered useless after the patch. They were fine before,
but as soon as the patch finished and the PC was rebooted, the CPU usage
was 100% and nothing could be done. I left both PC's sitting for about 20
minutes and the 100% CPU usage never came down. Another coworker said he
had the same issue with his home PC and he was eventually able to get into
the task manager and noticed that the system process was taking up 99-100%
    of the CPU.

    Anyone else experience this issue?

I have experienced this issue, eventually I was able to uninstall the
patch, the specific one that caused it was KB835732. According to some
information I found using Google it makes a difference if the Secondary
IDE Channel's Device 1 is set to use DMA if available as a transfer mode
instead of PIO Only. I'm not sure just how valid this is because I have
not tried, but I would be interested to know if anyone managed to get
this fixed after installing the patch. I'm not happy about having to
leave my system vunerable right now.

No, but I experienced a *third* issue after applying the updates on my Win2K
box. After being up for a couple of minutes, it would freeze for a moment
and then very briefly display a black screen saying:

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_<something>

and then reboot. The error would display so briefly that I had to read it
over the course of multiple consecutive crashes, and I never got as far as
the <something>, but some searching reveals it most likely said "AREA".

The Event Viewer revealed that a crash dump had been saved, but running
dumpchk on it wasn't all that illuminating. Nothing in the "Process"
section -- this was a pure kernel task. The Stack Trace:

    ChildEBP RetAddr Args to Child

    ffffffff 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 0xba5b2bf8

I had noticed that before the Tuesday updates came out (why are y'all saying
"Wednesday" above?), there was a Windows Update for my onboard Intel
Ethernet, but I hadn't yet applied it. I tried installing the new driver
(my system thankfully stayed up long enough for it to complete), and after
installing it, the crashes magically went away.

I was told a Win2K user at work experienced the same thing. Seems that
Microsoft may not have spent enough time testing one of these patches on the
Win2K platform. Dunno which one, since in recent years I'd found
Microsoft's patches to be well-tested enough that I haven't made a point to
apply them only one at a time so I could identify faulty ones, as I found it
necessary to do in past years.

A consulting client of mine had the same complaint. He was only able
to fix it by re-installing Windows. You may want to mention it on
NTBugTraq, they often discuss and sort out things like this.

Not that it's necessarily the case for you, but frequently patching is the
one time when reboots are almost bound to occur - as a result, an awful lot
of bugs are discovered after the patch, but not necessarily because of the
patch. General advice is to try uninstalling the patch and see if the
problem still exists, before deciding which way to debug - not very easy if
you have all your CPU locked up!

As to the "system process" taking up 99-100% of the CPU, there is a "System
Idle Process" that is _supposed_ to do that. I hope your coworker hasn't
    misconstrued :-)

Try calling PSS (you know, tech support?), and see if they have any ideas.

    A similar one.
When I login to my recently patched box, the start menu and everything on the
desktop isnt accesible, until I start the task manager and kill a process, it
    does not matter which one...

Check out the news groups at Microsoft:

    http://communities.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.asp

In this case, I suggest the "windowsupdate" newsgroup

These news groups are peer-peer support, although MVP's lurk.
If MSDN customer, MS guarantees an answer in 3 days or they will pick it
    up.

You can search such newsgroups for answers by going to Google Groups
    search.

I have run into the same thing with 2K workstations as well as 2K server.
On a side note, an XP 'goof off' box I use will no longer connect to the
online card games or anything else. (Thank goodness for BSD).

Question: Are these issues being seen primarily on Windows 2000 Server or
    Workstation? Or both?

Were you able to see what process(es) were driving up CPU usage?
Reinstalling windows probably would fix it but that doesn't tell what is
    hanging.

A consulting client of mine had the same complaint. He was only able
to fix it by re-installing Windows. You may want to mention it on
NTBugTraq, they often discuss and sort out things like this.

I couldn't do anything on the system. If I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to get into
the task manager, it literally took about 20 minutes. Everything was very
unresponsive. I ended up having to use the "repair" feature off the win2k
CD. It replaced a few files and then the system was fine until I went
back and re-updated, then the PC crashed after about 15 minutes and upon
reboot the system was 100% again. I repeated the "repair" option to get
everything back to normal again. And yes, it was the "system" process
that was 99-100%, not the system idle process.

I had neither one of the issues mentioned in this thread; but did have a =
single workstation (out of about 25) start spewing windows file protectio=
n error messages for almost every system file. The disturbing thing was t=
hat even after the box had access to the installation media (which wfp us=
es to roll back to the original file), the errors just kept coming. In th=
e event log, the service was writing more error messages saying that the =
file could not be replaced because the signatures didn't match.

I'm planning on reinstalling; but didn't have time this week so I disable=
d wfp by hex editing sfp.dll to turn the damn thing off. (Incidentally, I=
*love* windoze services that you can't control. That way I can't acciden=
    tally hurt myself. Thanks MS!)

The machine is SP4 fully patched with virusscan fully updated. I did some=
additional security auditing and didn't find anything strange. Everythin=
g started going to hell after applying the latest patches.

    Anyone else?

Don't know if this is duplicate info from another message, but there are two different issues with the KB835732 update. Specifically on Windows 2000 machines.

The first issue involves cached data in RAM. If a machine is rebooted immediately after applying the update there is a chance that the BSOD will come up. The STOP error is described as DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. A hard reboot will eliminate this transi
    ent error.

The second issue involves problems with the IPSec Policy Agent Service. This is enabled to start automatically with the update and it can lead to the CPU pegging. Stopping the service and disabling it will elimiate this issue.

Can't say that Microsoft can claim these issues were the result of updates being rushed to market. Most of the vulnerabilities were brought to their attention 6 months ago. At least the issues aren't as bad as Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6. That broke the
TCP/IP stack and really had me scrambling back then resuscitating my servers!
