Help. Brutele does not like peer to peer?

Sorry for writing in English, unfortunately I do not speak Dutch and
my French is also not up to scratch for wiriting.

I have been using Brutele Internet connection for a year, with some
occasional glitches, but generally with good results. Recently I have
been using WinMX in a Windows emulation environment (I have a
Macintosh). It worked well for some time, then, one day, the modem was
flashing an error signal. As I did other times, I disconnected the
modem and reconnected it again. This time the error signal continued.
For a whole day. Finally the next day it started working again.

The next evening I searched again with WinMX, and it worked . But
after a few hours the error came back. In brief, I have the impression
that if I do not use WinMX (or the emultor?) everything works well,
otherwise, after some time everything gets blocked (in one occasion
for the whole weekend. I called Brutele but they deny there is any
    block or limitation.

Is it possible that someone tatgets me with an attack and the firewall
shuts me out? Yesterday I tried again downloading with Limewire
(Macintosh-native, so non emulation and no WinMX) and after a couple
of hours I was blocked again.

For those who know the Brutele modem, when I am blocked it has a red
    ana two green lights flashing.
Can anybody explain this (or has had similar experiences)?

    Thanks in advance

    Maurizio

My educated guess is that you have an intermittent cable or modem problem.
Keep your modem powered up all the time, so that when you next have to call
Brutele, you know it should have worked all the time.
Ask them how often and when it went offline - they should be able to give
    you a detailed modem history.

I never shut it down unless it becomes blocked.

The problem is that when it goes into block, it is not possible to
make it work again for HOURS or even DAYS!

Good - that's the best thing to do with a cable modem

    So,

    Brutélé claim they don't block the modem for whatever reason ;
    You normally don't power it down ;
Yet Brutélé should be able to see the modem is down for hours/days when you
    call them

Don't they offer to send a technician around to figure out what's wrong ?

They did, and he said it is an intermittent problem due to the changes
in the installation the previous owner did.

Yet, I did not have problems for one year, and did not change
    anything.

Also, if I do not use peer to peer programs, I do not have problems
(for instance, no disconnection since I restaqrted the modem yesterday
morning). But as soon as I start a downloading, it has already
happened five or six times that it gets blocked for a long time.
That's why I am trying to find an alternate explanation, since that
given by Brutele does not seem to explain my problem.

    Thanks

Cable modems can work in a fairly large bracket of signal levels - and often
even outside it, which is a mixed blessing.
If the incoming signal is rather weak, but everything appears to be working,
chances are the outgoing signal needs to be too high to overcome the
    attenuation along the line.
It often works, but the modem is sending out at peak power.
Like a car being continuously redlined, it'll fail.

    > Also, if I do not use peer to peer programs, I do not have problems

P2P programs often mean you're continuously up/downloading, which can be
hard work for your modem if it's sending @ peak power.

Try generating some heavy bandwidth use by legal means, like uploading big
files to an FTP server (maybe loading your webspace to capacity a few times
    ?), and see what happens.

[get a network monitoring utility to see what sort of bandwidth you're
using, there are free utilities around - it just needs to be something
    simple ]

A dying power supply can also generate intermittent problems before it
    finally gives in.

Thanks, your explanations really make sense, and could describe a lot
of my situation, but... why then it takes sometimes hours, sometimes
days for the modem to recover?

Also, the guy from Brutele said the error signal means that the modem
cannot geyt the line? I was put out of track by that comment. In
effect I could ask the modem manufacturer for the complete list of
    error signals.

    Thanks

    Maurizio

BTW I think downloading old songs for which you have the LP IS legal!
I only do not want to lose a lot of time to digitize them to put in
    the MP3 reader.

Not legal according to Belgian law, but AFAIK nobody is going to complain
    either.

Why? I paid the author the rights a few (sometimes many) years ago,
why should I pay them again? Just for a change in format? Yes, in
principle there are rights also for the mastering etc, but we are all
paying some money as tax on the blank media, even when we use it for
data or our own movies, so.... Also, the recording companies say that
htere are a lot of costs in making the CDs (we know it is not true)
then I am not paying that, nor am I asking for it.

And in some cases the music actually comes from vinyl, from some guy
(god bless him) who was less lazy than myself. Then, what is the
reason it should not be legal if I have vinyl??

Also, why copying on cassettes is different? In principle there is no
difference, yet nobody ever made such a fuss. (I know, it's digital,
but in the above argument this does not make any difference)

    Ciao

Belgian copyright law gives you the right to make copies of your vinyl
records, CDs, etc.--but you have to do it yourself. You can make those
copies to be used by all family members in your house.

    > Also, why copying on cassettes is different? In principle there is no

    It's not different.
Before 1992 it wasn't even legal to make a backup copy for yourself.

*But*, like I already said: the record companies etc. have said they don't
really mind as long as you have a legal copy of the same album that you
downloaded. So you're rather safe... :-)
