Wij hebben pas 2 nieuwe Xeons aangeschaft, echter deze hebben nog steeds een load van 4 tot 6 gemiddeld gedurende de nacht wanneer er niets gebeurd. Overdag is dit zelfs 8 of hoger.
Hoe is dit mogelijk? Het gaat om Dual E5335 Servers met 4GB geheugen per stuk. Centos5_64bits met Plesk.
Welke processen draaien er op dat moment? TOP?

Maar is toch frustrerend na een dergelijke aankoop. Top sorteren of memory-usage en/of cpu-usage (ctrl+p, heb ik deze keer gedaan) geeft geen zware processen.
draait er een backup proces gedurende de nacht?
of andere sccheduled cronjobs?
is het een installatie die door jezelf is uitgevoerd of door een derde partij
etc
Ruikt als stukke IO ofzo. Gebruik je netwerk volumes? NFS? Samba? iSCSI?

Upload 'ns je complete "PS AUX" output.
Zoals Jesperw al aangaf, klinkt het inderdaad als een probleem met een I/O driver. We hadden het enkele jaren geleden ook met een Adaptec 2410SA Marvell H2 SATA chipset. De door SuperMicro geleverde driver zorgde ook voor een constante server load van 1,0onder CentOS.
Niks mis met een load van 4 bij een dergelijk systeem. Het zou juist erg zijn als er geen load van 4 was. Load geeft aan hoeveel processen er in de running queue zitten en aangezien je 8 cores hebt kunnen er acht processen tegelijk worden uitgevoerd.

Hij zegt dat er niets draait, dan lijkt me een load van 4 evengoed niet normaal. Dat zo'n machine het prima kan en dat de belasting an sich niet te hoog is, is uiteraard wel zo.
Het blijft echter raar dat 'ie idle al een load van 4 heeft. Dat lijkt mij dus een IO issue.
Hoe kan het dat deze machine aan het swappen is als er niets op draait?

Ik installeer liever geen uitgebreidere software op m'n servers welke 30min installatie/configuratie-tijd kosten waarvan ik nauwelijks weet of deze monitoring tool wel extra informatie brengt.
Ik zal me erin verdiepen. Heb er iig spijt van dat ik met mijn 64-bits CPU voor een 64 ipv 32-bits OS heb gekozen.

Ik zal me erin verdiepen. Heb er iig spijt van dat ik met mijn 64-bits CPU voor een 64 ipv 32-bits OS heb gekozen.
Wat heeft dat er dan mee te maken? In feite is het hetzelfde OS, alleen gecompileerd op een ander systeem.

Omdat sommige drivers niet optimaal werken onder 64bit, terwijl diezelfde drivers wel goed werken onder 32bits. Dit komt heel veel voor bij scsi / raid drivers, en laten we nou net vermoeden dat daar ook het probleem zit met zijn load ;)
sysstat is echt zo geinstaleerd, hoeft verder geen configuratie te hebben, en geeft wel nuttige info over je IO.
Ik heb overigens eenzelfde Dual-Quad draaien met zelfde raid kaart voor 4p. en daar geen problemen met centos 5 64-bit.

Opgelost. Bleek inderdaad IO-issue.
Write-cache was disabled op 3ware-controller.
Momenteel is de load op beide servers onder 0.1

Hmm bijzonder dat dit de oorzaak was maar goed om te weten mochten we zelf ook zoiets tegen gaan komen.
