Networks from all over Europe and further come together in Barcelona to discuss peering
Amsterdam/London/Frankfurt - Three of the world's leading Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), AMS-IX, DE-CIX and LINX, are hosting the second European Peering Forum on the 28th and 29th of November 2007 in Barcelona, Spain.
This unique event is designed to bring together more than 150 peering coordinators and network managers from the networks connected to the respective IXPs to discuss all aspects of peering, from negotiating to operations.
Peering is a cost neutral arrangement between two IP networks to exchange Internet traffic. It is undertaken to reduce costs and provide more direct routing of that traffic. Last year after the first ever peering forum in Europe, hosted by the same IXPs, there was a definite upsurge in peering negotiations to be detected that resulted in a lower than traditional ‘Christmas dip’ for 2006. The ‘Christmas dip’ is a phenomenon that is the result of people enjoying Christmas holidays rather than spending time online. The dip shows a near zero traffic growth for December, and in some cases even a decline. However last year after the first Forum the average growth over the named IXPs was at almost 4%, a lot more than normal.
Many leading Industry players will be making presentations to the peering community including Edwin Punt of KPN who will cover the European peering landscape and Bjorn Bjerkeskaug of Telenor who will talk about his experience with integrating and consolidating several peering networks over the course of 2007.
