Networks from all over Europe and further come together in Barcelona to discuss peering

Amsterdam/London/Frankfurt - Three of the world's leading Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), AMS-IX, DE-CIX and LINX, are hosting the second European Peering Forum on the 28th and 29th of November 2007 in Barcelona, Spain.
This unique event is designed to bring together more than 150 peering coordinators and network managers from the networks connected to the respective IXPs to discuss all aspects of peering, from negotiating to operations.

Peering is a cost neutral arrangement between two IP networks to exchange Internet traffic. It is undertaken to reduce costs and provide more direct routing of that traffic. Last year after the first ever peering forum in Europe, hosted by the same IXPs, there was a definite upsurge in peering negotiations to be detected that resulted in a lower than traditional ‘Christmas dip’ for 2006. The ‘Christmas dip’ is a phenomenon that is the result of people enjoying Christmas holidays rather than spending time online. The dip shows a near zero traffic growth for December, and in some cases even a decline. However last year after the first Forum the average growth over the named IXPs was at almost 4%, a lot more than normal.

Many leading Industry players will be making presentations to the peering community including Edwin Punt of KPN who will cover the European peering landscape and Bjorn Bjerkeskaug of Telenor who will talk about his experience with integrating and consolidating several peering networks over the course of 2007. Attendees that attended the event last year were very enthusiastic:

Sylvie LaPerrière, Director of Peering for VSNL International, said “I am very pleased to see the level of cooperation among the 3 largest exchanges in Europe. I have certainly been able to extend my peering base in Europe through this excellent, well-participated peering event.“

Teliasonera’s Peter Cohen agreed “The European Peering Forum was a valuable forum for me that brought together networks that previously had not attended other events. I’m looking forward to the next one.“

The IX operators are all non-profit organisations and therefore sponsors are key to making the event possible, this years Gold sponsor of the forum is Equinix. “Today’s challenges in the Internet are no longer the last mile. The sheer volume of IP data that is presenting itself today is starting to test the very engine of the Internet. ISPs, internet exchanges, datacenters, networks and content providers – we all need to work together to ensure a smooth transition to the next level, which is why these events are so important in getting the key people in this process together,” comments
Michael Winterson, VP Sales & Marketing at Equinix in Europe. Michael will be presenting ‘Scaling European Peering Infrastructure’ at the event.

Space is limited for the event and registrations will only be accepted from AMS-IX, DE-CIX and LINX members on a first come first serve basis. If you are member and are interested in attending, please visit the dedicated European Peering Forum website at: www.peering-forum.eu (http://www.peering-forum.eu/)

Notes to Editors:

1. AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange) is a neutral and independent not-for-profit Internet exchange providing services since the early 1990's. AMS-IX is one of the largest Internet hubs worldwide, where over 270 Internet related parties come together to exchange Internet traffic amongst them. Current traffic loads go well over 300 Gigabits per second. The AMS-IX platform provides high quality, non-blocking professional peering services for all types of IP traffic whether traditional data, video or VoIP. AMS-IX hosts the first mobile peering points worldwide, the Global GPRS Roaming Exchange (GRX) and the Mobile Data Exchange (MDX), as well as solutions for broadcasting traffic with the multicast peering service. (www.ams-ix.net (http://www.ams-ix.net/))

2. DE-CIX is the carrier neutral and independent Internet Exchange in Frankfurt/Germany. Founded in 1995, DE-CIX established an environment for the bilateral settlement-free exchange of Internet traffic (peering). DE-CIX is focussed on acting as the gateway between Central and Eastern Europe and the rest of the world. The company is serving 200+ carriers and ISPs from 25+ nations including leading international players (such as AT&T, Sprint, Google) and many players from Eastern Europe (Ex. Elion, Ukrainian Telecom, Türk Telekom). This makes DE-CIX the market leader for Central and Eastern Europe. (www.de-cix.net (http://www.de-cix.net/))

3. London Internet Exchange (LINX) connects the networks of Content Delivery and Internet Service Providers so that traffic may flow more efficiently between them. LINX is one of the largest Exchange Points globally, measured both in terms of the traffic that passes over its network and the Internet routes which are directly accessible from its peering LAN. Today LINX has more than 220 members – both ISPs and content delivery service providers – from the UK, mainland Europe, the USA, Africa and the Far East handling up to 95 per cent of all UK Internet traffic.
